Description of the substance
Titanium dioxide (titanium dioxide E171) - a dietary supplement, which is a white dye.
It is a transparent, crystalline powder, yellowing on heating. It occurs in nature in three variations: as minerals anatase, rutile and brookite having a different crystal structure. For substances used only titanium dioxide with anatase structure and rutile.
Titanium dioxide is approved for food use in the industry since 1994 as a dye to impart food bleaching effect.
The commodity form titanium dioxide is usually a pure substance, in which there is a slight amount of impurities and silica alumina improving processability of the product.
The main properties of the titanium dioxide include:
- High bleaching capacity;
- Chemical resistance;
- High moisture and weathering.
The smell and taste of the products of titanium dioxide is not affected, its main purpose is to give the product more appetizing appearance. Dietary supplement products gives perfect white, so attractive for the consumer.
The use of titanium dioxide
In the food industry titanium dioxide is used as a food additive E171, used for the production of fast breakfast, powdered milk, powdered products. With titanium dioxide bleached crab sticks and other analogues of fish products, chewing gum, mayonnaise, and lighten the icing, white chocolate, candy, etc.
In the production of titanium dioxide ravioli is used to lighten the meal. Dosage E171 is selected depending on the desired brightness of the test. At the same time the required amount of dye is introduced into the mass together with the flour and stir carefully to maximize the distribution of matter. Bookmark titanium dioxide is 100-200 grams per 100 kg flour.
The meat industry titanium dioxide, which are the properties of a good dispersibility (emulsification) and optical attraction, used to whiten bacon, pates and delicatessen products.
Titanium dioxide is used in the production of vegetable canned food, in particular for clarification of grated horseradish.
Harm titanium dioxide
Formal clinical studies to date have not been able to identify any negative effects from supplementation E171. According to titanium dioxide it not dissolved in gastric juice and is practically not absorbed by the body through the intestinal wall. Thus, titanium dioxide does not accumulate in tissues, is completely eliminated from the body.
SanPin 126.96.36.1993-03 allows manufacturers of products used in food, use of titanium dioxide in the volumes, which from the point of view of manufacturers enable them to achieve the desired technological effect.
However, the assumption on the potential dangers of titania still has: as shown by studies in rats, inhalation of powder of titanium dioxide increases the likelihood of cancer being carcinogenic to humans.
Some scientists suggest that nanoparticles are capable of destroying the substance the body at the cellular level, destroying their natural structure, however, the exact evidence to this fact, in addition to the tests in rodents is not available.
Despite the fact that used in foods titanium dioxide is considered harmless, study its effect on the body continues. Exceed the recommended dosage of food titanium dioxide (1% per day), people with weak immune systems are not desirable.
