 Isosorbide - nitro antianginal medication used for the treatment and prophylaxis of angina pectoris.

Pharmacological action

Isosorbide - highly effective drug for the treatment of coronary heart disease and the relief of angina attacks.

Vasodilating, antianginal and coronary dilator effect, lowers the tone of the vessel walls and causes vasodilation.

There are two types of nitro drug, which is identical to the action, but has some differences:

Isosorbide dinitrate - traditional antianginal drug. It reduces pressure and venous blood flow to the heart, asthma, shortness of breath and blueness of the skin and mucous membranes due to oxygen deficiency. With regular use of reduced antianginal and anti-ischemic its effect.

Isosorbide mononitrate is rapidly absorbed into the blood and is not metabolized in the liver, which ensures its higher efficiency compared to isosorbide dinitrate.

Product form

Isosorbide mononitrate released in the form of:

  • Tablets 20 mg (50 pieces in a package) and 40 mg (20 pieces per pack);
  • 1% solution in ampoules of 1 ml (50 pieces per pack).

Isosorbide dinitrate is produced in the form of:

  • Tablets 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg (20 and 50 pieces per pack);
  • Solution for infusion in vials of 10 ml and in vials of 50 ml.

On the basis of the nitrate compounds produced special drugs as sublingual metered aerosol and spray, capsules and tablets of prolonged action and films for sticking to the gum.

Indications for use of isosorbide

Isosorbide is used for the relief and prevention of strokes, rehabilitation treatment after myocardial infarction, as well as:

  • Inflammation of the lining of the arteries;
  • Some forms of pulmonary hypertension;
  • Chronic heart failure;
  • Pulmonary heart disease, as part of combination therapy.

As a means of first aid for the relief and prevention of strokes, myocardial infarction, isosorbide dinitrate is used by inhalation.

Intravenous drug use at:

  • Unstable angina;
  • Pulmonary edema;
  • Acute myocardial infarction.

Isosorbide dinitrate is often used like nitroglycerin for expanding the lumen of blood vessels in acute heart failure.

Isosorbide mononitrate is used in a combination therapy for the treatment of chronic heart failure.

Contraindications

Isosorbide is contraindicated in:

  • Hypersensitivity to organic nitrates;
  • Increased intracranial pressure, low blood pressure;
  • Cerebral hemorrhage and traumatic brain injuries;
  • Closure form of glaucoma (glaucoma in open form Isosorbide can be used).

Isosorbide dinitrate is not used intravenously in hemorrhagic stroke, cardiac tamponade, and constrictive pericarditis.

Isosorbide C caution is prescribed for liver failure, pregnancy and lactation. In children, the drug is not used due to lack of clinical studies.

Instructions for use of isosorbide

side effects
