Brief description of the disease
As is clear from the title, psoriatic arthritis combines just two diseases - rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. The inflammatory process affects the joints and the person at the moment is the most severe manifestation of psoriasis. The prevalence of the disease among the population of the Earth is small. According to experts, psoriatic arthritis, the symptoms of which can appear only in the later stages, distributed mainly among psoriasis patients (7 to 47%). Ordinary people suffer from inflammatory process much less (illness is fixed in 2-3% of the population).
Intrigue psoriatic arthritis manifested in the fact that it can occur without pain. As a result, in most cases the disease is detected too late, when adverse changes in joints already irreversible. This means that for the timely diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis, treatment should be administered as soon as possible, thus avoiding the serious consequences and complications. Methods for early detection of inflammatory standard: careful monitoring of the organism response to the known symptoms, regular examination by a rheumatologist.
All standard preventive measures are important for other orthopedic diseases, have no effect in the case of psoriatic arthritis because doctors do not know the exact cause of the inflammation. This means that the main way to fight the disease is so-called secondary prevention, which aims to slow the spread of disease and the preservation of the main functions of the joints.
Unfortunately, none of the clinic of the world still does not guarantee one hundred percent to get rid of this unpleasant disease. Currently, researchers are just beginning to understand the mechanisms of the immune system. It is possible that in a few years an effective cure will be found, but so far the diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis, the treatment continues to rely on ineffective medicines that suppress excessively strong immune reactions. Accordingly, sick people continue to suffer from the gradual destruction of soft tissues and joints. Many of the patients for a lifetime become disabled.
Psoriatic arthritis - symptoms and clinical picture
The most typical signs of inflammation - is the appearance of red, scaly patches on the skin, discoloration of nails on the hands and feet, the formation of small scars resembling pockmarks. Psoriatic plaques are small, but they quickly spread throughout the body, and this process is accompanied by an unpleasant itch and constant discomfort. As mentioned above, the diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis symptoms may be very late, so each person must undergo regular inspection at the rheumatologist and monitor your body. An indirect indication of the presence of inflammatory process are joint pain and swelling, but they are typical for conventional rheumatoid arthritis, so if any discomfort should consult a specialist to rule out the risk of severe complications.
Psoriatic arthritis - Treatment and prognosis
Any specific method of treating inflammation of the joints do not exist, so all efforts aimed at physicians, to restore lost functions and remove the pain. For this purpose, the following groups of drugs:
- nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, particularly ibuprofen. These drugs reduce joint stiffness, relieve pain, suppress the development of inflammation. However, they have a negative effect on the intestine, kidney, heart and stomach mucosa, however they should be taken with caution;
- corticosteroids - used when psoriatic arthritis accompanied by strong, sharp pains in the joints;
- basic drugs - reduce pain and inflammation, prevent the spread of the disease to other joints. Preparations of this group are very slow, so the effect of their use becomes visible after a few weeks of starting treatment;
- immunosuppressive agents - partly suppress the immune system, but eliminate healthy tissue from the "attack" of our own body, which, in fact, occurs in psoriatic arthritis. The most well-known immunosuppressive drugs - tacrolimus and azathioprine is.
Surgery is the treatment of psoriatic arthritis almost never used. They resort to it only in cases where the disease continues to spread, despite medication, and threatens to go to healthy joints.
